Most computers today have hardware for producing great sound. With the explosive growth of MP3 (which is popular but, unfortunately, has significant patent and licensing problems) and OGG (which is an open standard and is not encumbered with such patent issues, and quickly growing in popularity) you will need an OGG player on your desktop to enjoy your music. A tool to extract the music from your CDs into OGG format is also needed. We cover such tools in this chapter.
We also discuss OGG and MP3 players that provide portable music and are compatible with GNU/Linux.
There is also a collection of tools to support writing music and printing music (guitar tabs and sheet music). In this chapter we also explore these tools
For details of setting up your audio and for details of making sound recordings in general see Chapter 7. To duplicate CDs (including Audio CDs) and to burn music CDs see Chapter 14.3.
