Filename: BIOSVXD.TXT WWW URL: http://www.firmware.com/support/bios/biosvxd.htm FTP URL: ftp://ftp.firmware.com/text/biosvxd.txt Revision: 03/26/97 TLS Micro Firmware Technical Support Summary: How to extract BIOS.VXD from WIN95 CAB file to solve error message after installing PnP BIOS.
After installing a Plug-and-Play BIOS upgrade (such as M4HS45 or M4HS45G) Windows 95 will need to make some adjustments. It may be necessary to tell Windows 95 to detect new hardware by choosing CONTROLPANEL\ADDNEWHARDWARE. This will cause WIN95 to become aware of the PnP BIOS which may cause WIN95 to need an additional file, BIOS.VXD.
WIN95 will usually ask for the installation CD-ROM or diskettes to be inserted so that it can copy this file to the hard drive. WIN95 is sometimes not able to locate the file. This may be due to a bug in WIN95 or it may be caused by using a different media or version of WIN95 than what was used to originally install WIN95.
This file BIOS.VXD is contained within a CAB (cabinet) file on the WIN95 CD-ROM or diskettes. It will be in various CAB files on various different versions of WIN95. Some of the files we have found it in are listed below. You can use a CAB file viewer to locate the correct file, if necessary, or you can just try different CAB files until the extraction works, or you can use the /A parameter as indicated below.
Here is the command to extract the file and place it in the proper directory (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32):
EXTRACT /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 D:\WIN95\WIN95_09.CAB BIOS.VXD
This would of course be adjusted according to the source and destination of this file. Above example assumes CD-ROM drive on D: and BIOS.VXD in WIN95_09.CAB and WIN95 installed to C:\WINDOWS.
On the diskette versions of WIN95, the CAB files are not in subdirectories, so the above example would be adjusted to:
EXTRACT /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 A:\WIN95_10.CAB BIOS.VXD
Here are some of the CAB files we have found BIOS.VXD in:
Retail Upgrade CD-ROM WIN95_09.CAB OEM CD-ROM WIN95_09.CAB Full Version on Diskette WIN95_10.CAB (Disk 10) Retail Upgrade from Gateway2000 WIN95_15.CABYou can also use the /A parameter to tell the EXTRACT command to search all CAB files. This parameter still requires that a CAB file is specified - the search will begin with that CAB file.
EXAMPLE:
EXTRACT /A /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 D:\WIN95\WIN95_03.CAB BIOS.VXD
This will search all CAB files starting with WIN95_03.CAB. (The CD-ROMs I looked on did not have a WIN95_01.CAB or 02 file).
Also - you may need to verify that the CD-ROM drive is being recognized by WIN95.
