15 Minute Series What is IPv6?


The advantage of IPv6 is not only in its large address space, but also in its flexible architecture. IPv6 is being designed to allow for future growth of networking technologies and expansion of the Internet.

There are currently plans for three major types of IP addresses. When IPv6 is put in place, approximately 15% of the address space will be allocated. The remaining 85% of the address space will be reserved for future use.

The InterNIC (Internet Network Information Center), RIPE (Réseaux IP Européens), and APNIC (Asian-Pacific Network Information Center) are currently working on allocation issues for IPv6.
