What is SLIP/PPP?
SLIP and PPP are protocols, or rules, that allow a computer to simulate a direct connection to the Internet. A computer with SLIP or PPP uses a modem to dial in to an Internet Service Provider and establish a SLIP/PPP connection. The SLIP/PPP software and the TCP/IP software on the user's computer work together to manage the connection and oversee the movement of data packets between the Internet and the user's computer.
A SLIP or PPP connection facilitates the use of Internet applications and tools, such as telnet, file transfer, electronic mail, and graphical web browsers directly on the user's computer, thereby providing the user access to the full spectrum of the Internet's graphical offerings, such as multimedia, sound clips, photographs and animation.
