Garmin eTrex 10 - Waypoint Symbols

In this page you can see how waypoints are represented on the screen of the Garmin eTrex 10 device. Every waypoint is identified by a 16 bit number, where the most significant part is often called the type (because it usually identifies a family of symbols) and the least significant part is called the subtype. For example, the Gas Station symbol has the code 0x2f01, where the type 0x2f identifies the Auto services & transportation family, and 0x01 is the subtype. Subtype is in the range 0x00 - 0x1f.

Not all combinations of types and subtypes are displayed on the GPS, the following tables were generated by creating several test maps and checking how they are displayed on the screen. The reverse engeneering is complicated by the fact that several icons are displayed by the device only at scales of 50 meteres (200 feet) or lower.

If you want to create custom maps for the Garmin eTrex 10 from OpenStreetMap data, you will use the mkgmap program. The program uses a default style for all the Garmin devices and the style associates each OSM feature to a symbol type (the hex number like 0x2d01); each Garmin device will show its own icon for that code. Some devices have grayscale icons, others have color ones, some devices does not have at all an icon associated for that type code. So the default style may be not the optimal on the eTrex 10.

You can customize the styles/default/points source file of the mkgmap program and choose how each waypoint type will be rendered on the eTrex 10; this is an excerpt of the file:

The customized points file can be used in the mkgmap invokation, without recompiling the program.

POI Categories

POIs included into the map will be shown into the Where to? menu, divided into different categories according to the type and subtype code. Waypoints are displayed and are searchable by their name tag. In the following table only the main category has been taken into consideration, not any sub-category.

Here it is the full set (may be!) of the symbols displayed by the eTrek 10. Many of them are repeated for all the type series, e.g. codes in the range 0x1200 - 0x121f are all shown as the Info icon; in that case only the first one is placed into this table. There are also many types that just repeat the Dot White symbol, which are simply skipped in this table.
Some symbols are displayed on the map, but they are not listed into the waypoints categories (into the Where to? menu), so they are not searchable even they have a name: they are highlighted in red in this table. Beware that in the eTrex 10 waypoints lists are limited to 50 entries (the neares ones). Fortunately if you spell-search the name, you will find also unlisted ones.
