A value of **f 1.0** means that the lens aperture (the hole diameter) is equal to the focal lenght. Each following stop value is obtained by multiplying the previous one by **the square root of 2**. So the value **f 1.4** means that the aperture is obtained by dividing the focal lenght by 1.4, and so on with **2.0**, **2.8**, **4.0**, **5.7**, ...
